What We Do
Hugs Across America's mission is to provide trauamtized children in crisis with teddy bears. Each bear is tagged with an ispirational message of love and care, such as "Hug me when you're sad."
What We Believe
We believe that every child should have the chance to smile. We hope that our donations of teddy bears and other services will bring some comfort to children in crisis and turmoil.
How We Work
In the past, Hugs Across America has donated Teddy Bears to the Safe Center LI, an organization that empowers child and adult victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. In April of 2014, we volunteered at the Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen. In the Fall 2014 semester, FSC Hugs visited SIBS Place, a therapeutic program of South Nassau Hospital. This program serves children 5-17, who are living with a sibling or parent with cancer. Each member of SIBS Place received a teddy bear to hug. On campus, we hosted a fundraiser for Susan G. Komen and a purchased winter gloves, hats, and warm socks for the homeless. The members handed these items to homeless families at Harvest for the World. Hugs also purchased 300 sanitary napkins to send to Kenya through the Alabster Mobil Clinic in California.
Hugs in the Future
The upcoming semester includes a fundraiser on February 9th for the Have a Heart Children's Cancer Society, an organization located in Huntington, NY that collaborates with hospitals and medical centers to locate families who have financially fallen prey to cancer. This bake sale will take place on campus. On February 13th, the LI Coalition for the Homeless will be hosting an event at FSC. Hugs will have a coloring table for kids and will be handing out bears. On February 19th, HAA will be packing care packages for the troops and writing letters to soldiers. On February 27th, Hugs Across America will be volunteering at the Mary Brennan INN Soup Kitchen. In March, we will be visiting the Bethany House, a homeless shelter for women and children and giving bears. We will also be making a donation to the World Wildlife Fund, for a symbolic adoption of a panda bear.
